Pampered Bliss at Secrets Akumal - A Trip Report

My wife and I shared 10 days of pampered bliss at Secrets Akumal.  We 
began with reasonably good expectations and were blown away by all the 
attention to detail this resort has created to make guests feel extremely 
comfortable, happy and well taken care of, and completely stress-free.  It 
begins with their philosophy of all the things I have mentioned: upon arrival 
and until you leave the property, everything is taken care of for you.  There 
are no tiered services and no stressful decisions about daily meals, food or 
drink.   


 

The all-inclusive offerings were great although should you want 
upgraded beverages, spa services or activities you could opt to do these, but 
we really did not ever leave the property. We were treated as though we 
were more than guests and with great compassion and attention.  I highly 
recommend this resort to couples who want a relaxing and loving 
experience at this beautiful 5-star resort. 


 


Annie: Concierge- was AMAZING! She went above and beyond expectations 
like it was nothing, and I noticed she did this for everyone!


 


Oscar: Entertainment liaison- was super friendly and helpful/caring about 
guest experiences.


Santiago: Bartender extraordinaire- had our needs and wants down to a "T" 
and was also super friendly!


 


Jose': Poolside-was the best at getting us all pampered by the pool. He set 
up where and what we wanted, brought cold towels AND cleaned our 
sunglasses like new!


Efren: Pool and beach waiter- I ended up following him to wherever his 
section was, so kind and caring about our comfort and needs.


 


Maximiliano/Alejandro/ and Jonas (little J): all three funny and entertaining 
with games and other entertainment. 


Arturo and Wilberth are our FAVORITE waiters at Bordeaux (and to be fair, 
all staff very helpful and friendly).


 


Jolie at the front desk wrapped it all up at the end and welcomed us there 
AND to return with a sincere smile and attitude.


 


The restaurants: As mentioned, Wilberth at the Bordeaux was an amazing 
waiter and the experience was superb.  We were treated to flambé both 
nights and we had dinner there and were amazed at the taste and quality of 
the food. Portofino: Arturo was a highly attentive waiter and brought us 
EVERYTHING we desired.  Probably our favorite restaurant, the dining 
experience was perfect. 

Oh, my goodness, Maria at Coco Café’ was the best 
barista ever!  Seriously, always perfect coffee or drinks and a smile that lit 
up the morning!  She truly cared about her customers and always welcomed 
me each morning with that smile and a Spanish lesson for the day! 


 

 
Additionally, El Patio had elevated Mexican and Yucatan cuisine.  On the first night after a long day of travel we sat down to the best red corn chips, 
salsa and fresh guacamole I have ever tasted accompanied by an 
extraordinary margarita.  These were all the places we dined at more than 
one time although the Market café’s buffet was AMAZING and daily 
poolside BBQ’s were also outstanding.


 


This resort was an exceptional surprise.  I have been to many places in my 
lifetime, the staff, accommodations, food and drink, and overall experience 
was top tier and easily felt the most relaxed and well cared for I have ever 
been on vacation.

Bird Watching Magic in San Jose del Pacifico, Oaxaca

Bullock's oriole By Suzanne Staples While spending time in Oaxaca city in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, we decided to explore the mountainous areas surrounding the city.  Oaxaca rests in a valley between three mountain ranges.  The Majestic Sierra Madre del Sur rises to the south, climbing to about nine thousand feet. At the top, a dense pine-oak forest is interspersed with tree ferns, brilliant orchids and meters-long climbing vines. Tiny red salvia flowers and orange paintbrush generously dot the road that is carved from the steep mountain.  Many of the simple homes along the road at the higher elevations have plant nurseries.  Colorful pots of flowers line up in neat rows against the steep hill.  Pink and red begonias flourish here, as do rich blue Nile lillies and white calla lillies.  The people carry baskets of these blooms into Oaxaca city to sell in the many markets.
